DELE Exam: Complete Guide for 2026

The DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the official Spanish-language proficiency certification, awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education. It certifies your level of Spanish regardless of where or how you learned it — making it the most widely recognised Spanish certificate globally, used for university admissions, job applications, teaching credentials, and Spanish citizenship or residency applications.

What makes DELE special?

  • Issued by Instituto Cervantes — the world's largest Spanish-teaching institution
  • Recognised by universities, governments and employers worldwide
  • Diplomas never expire — once you pass, it's valid for life
  • Any regional variety of Spanish you use in speaking/writing is accepted

The Six DELE Levels

Instituto Cervantes offers six DELE exams for adults (A1 through C2) and two for school-age candidates (A1E and A2-B1E), all aligned to the CEFR and the Instituto Cervantes' own curricular plan. A standalone A2 diploma was recently added, and from May 2026 a school-oriented exam for B2 and C1 is also being introduced.

A1Beginner
A2Elementary
B1Intermediate
B2Upper-Intermediate
C1Advanced
C2Mastery
LevelWhat it certifies
A1Very basic everyday phrases and immediate needs
A2Simple, routine exchanges on familiar topics
B1Independent handling of everyday situations
B2Fluent, natural communication in most personal and professional contexts
C1Effective, flexible, precise use of Spanish in complex situations
C2Near-native mastery, including subtlety and nuance

Exam Pattern & Structure

Every DELE level tests the same four skills — Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking — but the tasks and timing scale up with difficulty. Skills are administered in groups, and the oral component may be held on a different day from the written papers.

How groups work by level

LevelGroup 1Group 2Group 3
A1, A2, B1, C1Reading + WritingListening + Speaking—
A2 (example)Reading (60 min) + Writing (50 min)Listening (35 min) + Speaking—
B2Reading (60 min) + Writing (60 min)Grammar & Vocabulary (60 min)Listening (30 min) + Speaking (10–15 min)
C2Test 1 (Reading)Test 2 (Writing + Listening)Test 3 (Speaking)

Practical notes

  • Total exam time is typically 2–4.5 hours depending on level, plus speaking preparation time
  • The oral exam date/time is usually emailed a few weeks in advance — different day from written papers
  • No dictionaries or aids are permitted
  • From B1 upward, listening/reading texts include various regional Spanish accents
  • For speaking and writing, any regional variety you use (e.g., Latin American) is accepted

Grading Criteria — How You Pass or Fail

This is the part most people misunderstand. The result is always binary: APTO (Pass) or NO APTO (Fail) — there is no numeric grade on the diploma itself.

LevelPassing condition
A1 – C1At least 30/50 points in BOTH grading groups independently (60% in each pair)
C2At least 20 points in each of the three separately scored tests

Critical rule — you cannot offset a fail

Doing extremely well in Reading & Writing cannot compensate for a fail in Listening & Speaking — and vice versa. Both groups must independently reach the 60% threshold. Many candidates fail because they neglect one skill pair.

Not sure which level to attempt?

A good way to self-assess is to paste a piece of your written Spanish into the Lingaso Writing Analyser. It evaluates your vocabulary range and grammar against CEFR levels, giving you a realistic sense of where you stand before registering. Targeting B2? Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DELE certificate expire?

No. DELE diplomas are valid for life. Some institutions may informally prefer "recent" certificates, but the diploma itself has no expiry date — unlike some other language qualifications.

Can I retake just one skill if I fail?

No. If you fail, you must retake the entire exam at the same level. There is no option to resit only Listening or only Speaking.

Is DELE accepted for Spanish citizenship?

Yes. DELE A2 (or higher) is the most common language certificate accepted for Spanish citizenship by residency. You also typically need to pass the separate CCSE exam.

How is DELE different from SIELE?

DELE is issued by Instituto Cervantes (Spain) and results in a pass/fail diploma per level. SIELE is a different exam (co-administered by UNAM, Buenos Aires, Salamanca and Cervantes) that gives a score rather than a level diploma, and is more common in Latin American academic contexts.

Can I use Latin American Spanish in the exam?

Yes. For speaking and writing, any regional variety — including Latin American Spanish — is fully accepted. Listening materials from B1 onward include various regional accents.

How long do results take?

Results are typically published approximately two months after the written exam date. Diplomas for those who pass are then sent by post.
